USES OF -nge- AND -ngali-
Sometimes for something to happen,it depends on a certain situation. When we describe situations and things that did not happen because the ‘other’ conditions they depended on to happen did not happen,we use verbs with prefixes-nge- or -ngali-.
Example:
1.Ningekuwa na pesa,ningekununulia gari.(If I had money,I would have bought you a car).
2.Tungaliwaona,tungaliwasalimia.(We would have greeted you if we had seen you).
NOTE:Although-nge- and -ngali- means the same thing,they cannot be mixed in the same sentence. For example,WE CANNOT say;
aNGEniita niNGALIitika.Instead we either say;
ANGEniita niNGEitika or aNGALIniita,niNGALIitika.(If he/she had called me,I would have responded).
NEGATING SENTENCES WITH -nge- AND -ngali-.
One way of negating a verb is the use of prefix si- or -si-.
The sentences in the examples above are negated this way:
1.Nisingekuwa na pesa,nisingekununulia gari.(If I didn’t have money,I wouldn’t have bought you a car).
2.Tusingaliwaona,tusingaliwasalimia.(If we had not seen you,we wouldn’t have greeted you.).
