We studied reading numbers in swahili in a previous lesson from number 1 to 10..
Let’s recall for the benefits of those weren’t there…
Here we go…
#No. In Swahili. In English
1 Moja. One
2 Mbili. Two
3 Tatu Three
4 Nne Four
5 Tano Five
6. Sita. Six
7. Saba. Seven
8. Nane. Eight
9. Tisa. Nine
10. Kumi. Ten
#NOTE the following common pattern of reading numbers in swahili because it’s common even up the higher numbers eg. in billions & trillions ;
•Before the last number reading , there is this “na” which means “with”
Let’s see in practice…
✓ Ten is ” Kumi ” in swahili.
✓ “na” means “with” in this context .
✓While 11 is read as ” Eleven ” in english, but in swahili 11 is read literally as ” Ten with one “
Let’s look below examples from eleven (11) to twenty (20)
11- Kumi na Moja >> This literally means ” Ten with one “
12- Kumi na mbili >> literary means ” Ten with two “
13- Kumi na Tatu >> literally means ” Ten with three “
14- Kumi na Nne = Ten with four
15- Kumi na Tano = Ten with five
16- Kumi na sita = Ten with six
17-Kumi na saba = Ten with seven
18- Kumi na Nane = Ten with eight
19- Kumi na Tisa = Ten with nine
20. Ishirini = Twenty
Note :
✓ starting from twenty to thirty, it follows the same pattern like from 11-19…
✓ But now we are in twenties, in swahili 20 is ” Ishirini “
For example While in English 23 is read as ” twenty three ” in swahili it’s “Ishirini na Tatu ” = “Twenty with three “
Let’s go….
21 – Ishirini na Moja =Twenty with one “
22 – Ishirini na mbili = Twenty with two.
23 – Ishirini na Tatu =Twenty with three.
